“Will she file charges?” Ryan Fortune asked. “She left the state because she didn’t trust the police.”
Flynn sat in his car with the cell phone cradled to his ear and frowned at the door to the doctor’s office. “I think she will, if she doesn’t have to go back to California to do it.”
“I didn’t know it was possible to press charges from outside the jurisdiction where the assault took place.”
“Usually it isn’t. But with your money paying for an investigation and the help of the sheriff’s office here, it can be done.”
“You haven’t said anything to Emma about all this?”
“I wanted to get the loose ends tied up first.”
Ryan Fortune had called Flynn the day after he brought Emma to the lake. The man would make a fine old-time patriarch, Flynn thought; he wouldn’t stand for anyone threatening a member of his family. He wanted Shaw put away quickly, and for a nice, long time.
Flynn agreed. The two men had come to terms readily.
“Let me know when you’ve finished tying knots,” Ryan said. “I’m more than ready to hear that Shaw is behind bars.”
“He’ll make bail,” Flynn cautioned him. “And if Emma won’t go back to testify, there’s not much chance of a conviction.”
“But with this hanging over him, he won’t be able to leave the state. Not if he wants to keep his license.”
“That’s the idea.” Flynn switched subjects. “I guess you haven’t heard from Holly Douglas.” That young woman was the only one of the lost Fortune heirs he’d tracked down who hadn’t attended the party at the ranch. She lived in Alaska, so he’d let someone else handle the contact. That had probably been a mistake. She’d turned down the invitation cold. Apparently there was another Fortune who was less than thrilled by her newfound connection.
“I said I’d call if she turned up,” Ryan snapped.
Flynn’s eyebrows rose. “Good enough.”
“Sorry. I’ve been fighting a stomach bug…yes, Lily, what is it?” His voice faded, as if he’d turned away from the phone. Flynn faintly heard Ryan’s wife in the background. “No, food probably isn’t a good idea. Maybe later…don’t fuss. I’m fine.” His voice grew distinct again. “I take it Emma’s doing okay? No complications?”
Not unless you counted the fact that the man who was supposed to be protecting her had been ready to pull her clothes off in the car an hour ago. “She says she’s fine. She doesn’t look swollen or anything.”
There was a moment’s silence, then a low chuckle. “If you haven’t noticed the swelling, you’re not as observant as I thought.”
“I meant in her hands and feet, like happens with that toxemia stuff.” Before calling Ryan, Flynn had gone to the library and scared himself silly. He’d had no idea so many things could go wrong with a pregnancy.
“Sounds like you’ve been doing your homework.” There was sympathy as well as amusement in Ryan’s voice.
“I thought I should know what I’m dealing with. I’ll be in touch when—hell, here she comes.” Flynn said goodbye and disconnected.
